about

If you've been around at HT you may have seen a dusty old piano at the back of church by the altar. I’ve played this piano most days while working at HT, crafted countless Sunday sets and band arrangements on it, and spent many a happy lunchtime bashing around it. It’s the piano on which I wrote a couple of songs - Your Ways and Nothing More. You might recognise it from the Songs of Devotion videos (www.htcambridge.org.uk/songs-of-devotion), or the occasional HT evening service or Student night. It’s imperfect in so many ways - it’s out of tune, the sustain pedal squeaks horribly, and moths have eaten away at the felt inside the hammers so every time you play a key there’s a clicking sound as you release it. I believe you call it ‘character’.

With HT about to be transformed, the piano is being sold. Last Sunday afternoon, HT’s final Sunday in our building before building works begin, I sat down and recorded some improvisations. A little something to remember it by. These recordings are rough and ready - you can hear all the imperfections of the piano, as well as the noise of buskers outside HT. In many ways, this document is like the piano itself - ragged around the edges, unpolished, but hopefully endearing and beautiful in its own way.
